A 23-year-old man from Kerala has confessed to the murders of six people, including members of his own family. Affan, the suspect, walked into the police station and admitted to the killings.
The gruesome killings took place on Monday evening in the Venjaramoodu area, near Thiruvananthapuram.
Police have confirmed the deaths of five people, including Affan’s 13-year-old brother, his grandmother in her 80s, and a young woman believed to be his girlfriend. Two other victims have been identified as his paternal uncle and his uncle’s wife.
Affan’s mother, who was also attacked, is in critical condition and is currently being treated in the ICU of a private medical college hospital.
How did the killings occur?
The murders took place across three houses in the Venjaramoodu area.
According to a report by The Times Of India, the mass killing began around 3 pm on Monday when Affan first murdered his 88-year-old grandmother, Salma Beevi, at her home in Pangode. After killing his grandmother, he traveled to the nearby village of SN Puram, approximately 16 km away, where he killed his paternal uncle, Abdul Latheef (58), and his uncle’s wife, Shahida Beevi (54).
He then returned home, where he killed his 13-year-old brother before attacking his mother, Shemi (47), who is a cancer patient.
Affan’s confession to the police
The publication further reported that the murder was pre-planned, and Affan told the police that he killed his family members because they refused to help him settle a significant amount of debt. He claimed that after suffering financial losses in a business venture in a Gulf country, his family members were unwilling to assist him in clearing the debt.
However, the police have expressed doubt about his explanation and are pursuing further inquiries to determine if there were other underlying factors behind the murders. They are investigating his mobile phone records and call logs, and are considering whether Affan’s actions may have been influenced by drug use or other issues.
Affan and his younger brother, Afzan, had lived with their father, Rahim, in the Gulf before returning to Kerala following their father’s business collapse.
After committing the murders, Affan claimed to have consumed rat poison in an attempt to take his own life. He was subsequently admitted to the hospital, but doctors could not confirm the presence of any poison in his system during the medical examination. He is currently under police observation.
Despite Affan’s confession about the motive, the police are still investigating the incident to learn more about the shocking crime and to understand the circumstances that led to it.
