A Delhi man was arrested for allegedly killing his wife in Prayagraj under the pretext of taking her to Maha Kumbh, the police said.
The man, identified as Ashok Kumar, allegedly slit the throat of his wife, Meenakshi, in the bathroom of a homestay in the Jhunsi area on the night of February 18 in the holy city where they arrived from Delhi’s Trilokpuri.
How Did The Incident Take Place?
The Prayagraj Police received information on February 19 morning that the body of a woman had been found in the bathroom of a homestay which was being used as a guesthouse for the Maha Kumbh pilgrims.
As the police launched an investigation into the incident, they found out that the couple had arrived at the homestay the previous night and had been allotted the room without ID verification. As the manager saw the crime scene in the morning, he informed the police.
The police circulated the photo of the woman on social media and newspapers to ascertain her identity. On February 21, the relatives of the deceased identified her.
Meenakshi’s brother, Pravesh Kumar and her two sons reached Prayagraj upon coming across the pictures and confirmed her identity at the Jhunsi police station. The police registered a case against Ashok and arrested him.
During police interrogation, Ashok confessed to committing the crime and revealed his plot to kill his wife for around three months.
He was involved in an extramarital affair due to which he planned to kill his wife and pursue his illegal relationship.
How Was The Truth Revealed?
In an attempt to mislead their family, Ashok contacted his son Ashish, falsely claiming Meenakshi had gone missing in the crowds at the pilgrimage. However, Meenakshi’s son, Ashwin, grew suspicious and initiated a search for his mother upon arriving at the Mahakumbh with his family on February 20.
Police investigations, which included analysing CCTV footage and forensic evidence, revealed inconsistencies in Ashok’s statements. Further raising suspicions, a video surfaced on social media, uploaded by Ashok just a day before the murder, showing the couple taking a holy dip. The mounting evidence led to Ashok’s subsequent arrest.
