The parents of the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year have alleged that they have yet to receive their daughter’s death certificate from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).
While the Panihati Municipality issued a cremation certificate, the grieving parents claim that KMC has not provided them with the official death certificate.
According to the parents, KMC officials directed them to RG Kar hospital authorities for the document. However, hospital officials reportedly stated that issuing death certificates falls under KMC’s jurisdiction.
Clarifying the protocol, civic health department officials explained that while KMC generally issues death certificates for both natural and unnatural deaths occurring in hospitals within its jurisdiction—including government-run facilities—it remains responsible for providing certificates for deaths occurring on hospital premises.
The victim’s parents argue that RG Kar authorities have maintained that KMC is responsible for issuing death certificates for all cases, including “brought-dead” patients.
The 31-year-old doctor’s body was discovered in a semi-naked state inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year, sparking nationwide outrage and protests.
Following an investigation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a charge sheet against Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police. On January 20, the trial court sentenced Roy, the sole accused in the case, to life imprisonment till death. The CBI had sought the death penalty for him.
The trial, which commenced on November 11, 2024, was concluded in just 59 days. The CBI had taken over the case on August 13, and charges against Roy were framed on December 4.
